Canada Council announces Killam award winners

The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded the 2002 Killam Prizes to five outstanding Canadians. The $100,000 prizes were made to Lap-Chee Tsui (health sciences), Robert Vaughan Moody (natural sciences), Nicholas Georganas (engineering), Harry Arthurs (social sciences) and Ian Hacking (humanities) at an April 18th ceremony at the Governor General’s residence in Ottawa. It was the first time the awards have been awarded to recipients in the social sciences and humanities and the first time they were held at Rideau Hall.

Tsui was honoured for his work as a geneticist and for groundbreaking research into cystic fibrosis. He is the head of the genetics and genomic biology research program at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and a professor in the Univ of Toronto’s department of molecular and medical genetics.

Moody is a mathematician and a professor in the Univ of Alberta’s department of mathematical and statistical sciences and the inaugural director of the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery.

Georganas is an expert in multimedia communications. A member of the Univ of Ottawa’s faculty of education for 32 years, Georganas was the founding dean of its faculty of engineering.

Arthurs is a distinguished legal scholar who has held a number of senior academic posts with the Univ of Toronto and served as president of York Univ from 1985 to 1992.

Hacking is a distinguished scholar in many disciplines including epistemology, sociology the philosophy of language and the history of psychiatry. He was taught at several universities and currently splits his time between the Univ of Toronto and Collége de France in Paris.

The Killam Trusts are currently valued at $400 million and the Killam fund, administered by the CCFA, is valued at $61.3 million. The Trusts fund scholarships and research at four Canadian universities, a research institute and the Canada Council.
