Mitacs CEO to take over helm at NSERC

Dr. Alejandro Adem, CEO and scientific director at Mitacs Inc., will take over as president of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) starting October 1. Adem will become the seventh person to hold the position since NSERC was established in 1978. He replaces Dr. Mario Pinto who resigned as president in September 2018.

Adem is an accomplished scientist in mathematics, holding the Canada Research Chair in Algebraic Topology and Group Cohomology at the University of British Columbia since 2005. Prior to joining Mitacs in 2015, Adem was director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences where he built several national and international partnerships, managed multiple levels of funding and developed industrial collaborations.

Before this role, he served as co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley (2003–2007) and chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (1999–2002).

His international experience includes placements at ETH Zurich, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Max Planck Institute in Bonn, Princeton University, and the University of Paris VII and XIII.

Adem has a PhD from Princeton University and a BSc from the National University of Mexico.
