A new centre for artificial intelligence is in the works in Montreal further solidifying its position as one of Canada’s main hubs for AI. Thales SA, a France-based, multinational defence and aerospace contractor, recently announced the creation of the Centre of Research and Technology in Artificial Intelligence eXpertise (cortAIx), which will be supported by the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), the Institute of Data Valorization (IVADO), and the Vector Institute of Toronto. Thales says Montreal's AI ecosystem including MILA, IVADO and universities and laboratories is important to the development of cortAlx. The centre is expected to provide advanced AI solutions to serve the requirements of airlines, satellite operators, air traffic controllers, mainline and light rail operators, armed forces and critical infrastructure managers. Expected to generate 50 new jobs for AI researchers and developers, the centre will focus on safe and ethical "AI inside" solutions while providing clients with enhanced decision-making capabilities. Thales’ Canadian operations focus on defence & security, avionics and transportation in Québec City, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.
