Canadian universities are undermining their much-vaunted independence by entering into research collaborations with industry, according to a major new report by the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). Entitled Open for Business: On What Terms?, the report examines 12 major university-industry collaborations and programs and assesses them according to principles jointly established by CAUT and the American Association of University Professors. The research and program collaborations included in the study include Alberta Ingenuity Centre for In-Situ Energy, Centre for Oil Sands Innovation, Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec, Vancouver Prostate Centre, Balsillie School of International Affairs, Consortium for Heavy Oil Research by University Scientists and Munk School of Global Affairs.
